How a jetting nozzle actually works
A jetting nozzle converts your jetter's flow (GPM) and pressure (PSI) into directional jets of water. Rear-facing jets create thrust that pulls the hose up the pipe and scours the walls on the way back; forward jets (on penetrating nozzles) punch a pilot hole through a hard blockage so the nozzle can advance. The jet angle, jet count, and orifice size all change how a nozzle behaves — a wide rear-jet pattern is great for grease and general cleaning, while a tighter, more aggressive pattern is built for roots and scale.
Step 1 — Match the nozzle to your machine (GPM is king)
The single most important spec is flow rate (GPM). Your nozzle's orifices have to be sized to your jetter's flow, or you'll either starve the pump (orifices too big) or build excess pressure with no cleaning power (orifices too small). A quick rule of thumb for the machines most plumbers run:
- Cart jetters (up to 4 GPM): compact nozzles sized for residential cleanouts and small lines.
- Trailer jetters (4–18 GPM): the workhorse range — most of our nozzles are built right here.
- Truck / skid units (18+ GPM): higher-flow nozzles for mainline and municipal work.

Step 2 — Match the nozzle to the line size
Line diameter determines how the nozzle tracks and turns. Small and tight lines (2"–4") need a compact body that navigates bends without hanging up — see our lateral and tight-line nozzles. Residential mainlines (4"–6") are the bread-and-butter range — browse residential mainline nozzles.
