Vitrified clay pipe (VCP)
Clay pipe is fired ceramic. The wall itself is tough — it shrugs off high pressure, doesn't corrode, and doesn't care about grease or chemicals. What clay can't do is hold a joint together forever. It was laid in short sections, usually two to four feet each, with a bell-and-spigot joint packed with mortar or a bituminous compound. Those joints are the weak point.
Over decades the joints crack, the packing washes out, and the sections shift. That gives you two problems: root intrusion at every joint, and offsets where one section drops or slides against the next. On camera, clay reads as a warm tan or gray, with a visible seam every few feet. Roots come in like a curtain right at those seams — rarely in the middle of a section.
Orangeburg pipe
Orangeburg is a different animal. It's not ceramic or plastic — it's wood-fiber pulp bound with hot pitch (bitumen). People called it "no-corrode" pipe when it went in, mostly from the 1940s through the early 1970s. It was cheap and light. It also has a shelf life, and that shelf life is up.
Orangeburg fails by softening and deforming. The pipe goes oval, then blisters, then delaminates — the layers separate like a soggy paper towel roll. On camera you'll see a dark, almost tar-colored wall, an out-of-round shape, and often bubbles or flaps of material hanging into the flow. If you see that, slow way down. This pipe will not forgive an aggressive nozzle.
Jetting clay pipe: the standard method
For clay, hydro jetting is the normal, accepted way to clean the line. The pipe wall handles typical jetter pressures without complaint, and jetting is far gentler on old joints than a cable machine banging around inside the bell. The job is almost always roots.
Attack the joints, not the pipe
Because roots enter at the seams, you're cleaning a series of rings, not one long tube. A rotating root nozzle is the tool — the spinning jets sweep the full circumference and shear roots off flush at the wall. Feed slowly. When you hit a rooted joint you'll feel the hose load up and hear the nozzle change pitch. Let it dwell there and do its work before you advance.
A practical rhythm: advance to the joint, pause and let the nozzle clear the ring, then creep forward to the next seam. Rushing through drags cut roots downstream in a wad that can plug the line at the next tight spot.
Follow with a finishing pass
Once the roots are cut, swap to a finishing or flushing nozzle with more rear jets and make a clean pull downstream. This carries the debris out instead of leaving a compost pile in the belly of the line. A camera pass after confirms you actually cleared the joints and didn't just bore a hole through the root mass.
Watch for offsets that grab the nozzle
The real hazard in clay is the offset joint. When one section has dropped or shifted, the leading edge of the downstream pipe sticks into the flow like a lip. A nozzle can snag on that lip, and if you keep feeding hose you'll either wedge it or ramp it right out of the pipe into the soil at a broken joint.
If the hose stops advancing and you didn't feel roots, stop. Don't power through. Back off, get the camera on it, and confirm whether it's a root ball or a hard offset. Pushing a nozzle through a bad offset is how you turn a cleaning call into an excavation.

Orangeburg: clean it gently, and be honest
Here's where judgment matters more than horsepower. Orangeburg that's already deforming is living on borrowed time. Jetting can restore flow short-term, but you are cleaning the inside of a pipe that is structurally failing. Treat every Orangeburg job as camera-first, low-aggression, and expectations-managed.
Camera first — every time
Never blind-jet a pipe you suspect is Orangeburg. Get eyes on the wall. If it's still mostly round and firm, you can make a careful cleaning pass. If it's blistered, delaminating, or collapsing, jetting isn't a repair — it's a temporary measure at best, and it can accelerate the failure.
Keep it low and sweeping
If you do clean it, use a nozzle with a low, flushing jet angle rather than an aggressive penetrating or cutting head. You want to move debris with volume, not blast the wall with a tight, high-impact stream. Skip the rotating root cutter — those are built to shear material at the wall, and the wall is exactly what you're trying not to damage. Feed slowly and let water do the moving.
Set expectations before you start
Tell the homeowner plainly: "This is Orangeburg pipe. I can get you flowing again today, but this material is at the end of its service life. The real fix is replacement or lining. Anything I do here is a stopgap to buy you time." Say it before the job, not after. Nobody wants to hear it's failing right after they paid you to clean it.
Protect yourself: document everything
On fragile pipe, your camera footage is liability insurance. If a line is already delaminating and it fails a week later, you do not want to be the last person who touched it with no record of its condition.
- Record the camera pass before you jet, showing the existing damage.
- Record the pass after, showing you cleaned it without adding damage.
- Note the pipe material and condition on the invoice.
- Put the recommendation — "replacement advised" — in writing.
This isn't about covering yourself from honest work. It's about proving the pipe was already failing when you got there, which on Orangeburg is almost always the case.
When to walk away
Knowing when not to jet is part of the trade. Walk away — or step down to camera-and-quote only — when you see:

- A void or open joint where water and debris are clearly exiting into the ground.
- Any line where you can see daylight, dirt, or the camera exiting the pipe entirely.
In those cases the honest move is to stop, show the customer the footage, and quote the repair. You'll build more trust telling someone their pipe needs replacing than by taking their money to jet a line that's coming apart.
Talking to the homeowner about the camera
Most people have never seen the inside of their sewer and have no idea what's normal. Narrate the footage in plain language. Point at the screen: "See those roots coming in right there? That's a joint between two clay sections. We'll cut those out." Or, for the bad news: "See how this pipe is oval and bubbling? That's Orangeburg breaking down.
