High-Pressure Jetting Safety: Preventing Injury on Every Drain Job

A sewer jetter is a serious tool. The same pressure that shreds a root mass will go through a boot, a glove, and the skin underneath without you feeling much at first — and a high-pressure injection injury that looks like a pinhole can cost you a finger or a hand if it's not treated fast. Add scalding water, chemical exposure from drain contents, hose whip, and blowback out of a cleanout, and it's clear why every experienced jetting pro treats safety as part of the job, not an afterthought.

This is a no-fluff safety guide written for working drain techs. None of it slows you down once it's habit — and all of it beats an ER visit.

The Injuries That Actually Happen

Know what you're guarding against:

  • High-pressure injection injury. The big one. A jet stream can inject water (and whatever's in the drain) into tissue through skin. The entry wound can look minor while serious damage happens underneath. This is a surgical emergency — go to the ER and say "high-pressure injection injury," do not wait to see if it gets worse.
  • Blowback / spray-back. Pressure and debris blasting back out of a cleanout, fitting, or the line opening — straight at your face and eyes.
  • Hose whip and uncontrolled nozzle. A nozzle that exits the pipe under pressure, or a hose that lashes when a fitting lets go.
  • Scalding. Hot-water and steam jetters add burn risk.
  • Biological/chemical exposure. It's a sewer line. Assume the contents are hazardous.

PPE: The Non-Negotiables

Wear it every time, not just on the "big" jobs:

  • Eye and face protection. Safety glasses minimum; a face shield for any work near an open cleanout or where blowback is likely.
  • Cut/penetration-resistant gloves. Standard gloves won't stop a jet, but they reduce abrasion and contamination handling the hose and nozzle.
  • Waterproof boots and clothing. Keeps contaminated water and spray off skin.
  • Hearing protection around loud gas units.
  • Never aim a nozzle at yourself or anyone else — ever, even "off." Treat it like a loaded tool.

Procedure: Build Pressure Safely

Most jetting injuries trace back to losing control of the nozzle or the line opening. Tighten your procedure:

  • Insert the nozzle into the line before building pressure, and keep it in the line until pressure is relieved. A nozzle outside the pipe at pressure is a loose weapon.
  • Never withdraw the nozzle from the pipe under pressure. Back off, relieve pressure, then pull it. This is also how nozzles end up whipping out of a cleanout.
  • Mind the minimum insertion depth. Keep enough hose past the opening that the nozzle can't reverse out under its own rear-jet thrust.
  • Control the line opening. Stand clear of the direct blowback path; use a hose containment/guide at the cleanout where practical.
  • Relieve pressure before disconnecting anything. Pull the trigger/open the valve to bleed stored pressure before you touch a fitting.
  • Communicate. If a helper is operating the machine, agree on clear start/stop signals.

Inspect the Equipment That Can Hurt You

Failures under pressure are dangerous, and they almost always telegraph first:

  • Hose: Check for bulges, cuts, kinks, and abrasion-worn jacket. A hose about to burst often shows a soft spot or jacket damage first. Retire damaged hose — don't tape it.
  • Fittings and couplings: Confirm they're rated for your max working pressure and properly tightened. A let-go fitting at high PSI is a whip-and-spray hazard.
  • Nozzle and inserts: Worn or cracked inserts change jet behavior unpredictably and can fail.   • Relief/unloader valve: Make sure pressure relief is functioning so the system can't over-pressurize.

Working Safely Around the Site

The nozzle and hose aren't the only hazards. The whole job site needs attention:

  • Slip and trip control. Jetting makes everything wet. Manage hose runs across walkways, and watch for slick floors around indoor cleanouts.
  • Confined spaces. Manholes, vaults, and below-grade access carry their own confined-space hazards — atmosphere, entry/exit, and rescue planning. Don't treat a manhole like a regular cleanout.
  • Electrical awareness. Water and electricity around a job site (sump pumps, panels, extension cords) demand care, especially in flooded basements.
  • Bystanders and pets. Keep the homeowner, kids, and pets clear of the work zone and the line opening. Blowback doesn't care who's standing there.
  • Traffic. For curbside or street cleanouts, set up cones/signage so you're not working with your back to moving cars.

Match Pressure to the Job

Running more PSI than the job needs increases every risk for no benefit. If Someone Gets Injected — Act Immediately

This is worth repeating because the wound is deceptive:

  • A high-pressure injection injury is a medical emergency even if it looks like a pinhole.
  • Go to the ER immediately and explicitly state it's a high-pressure injection injury so they treat it surgically and fast.
  • Do not "wait and see." Delay is what costs fingers and hands.

Train Helpers Before They Touch the Machine

A lot of jetting injuries involve a green helper running the machine while the lead works the hose. Before anyone operates the pump:

  • Walk them through start/stop and how to relieve pressure.
  • Agree on hand signals — noise from a gas unit drowns out shouting.
  • Make the "nozzle stays in the pipe under pressure" rule absolute, no exceptions.
  • Make sure they know the injection-injury emergency response before the job, not after.

A two-minute briefing prevents the most common crew accidents.

Make Safety a Habit, Not a Hassle

The pros who do this for decades without a serious injury aren't lucky — they're consistent. PPE every time. Nozzle stays in the pipe under pressure. Relieve pressure before touching fittings. Inspect the hose and inserts before they fail. None of it slows a competent crew down, and all of it keeps you working.
