Jetting French Drains, Yard Drains and Downspout Lines Without Wrecking Them
Exterior drainage lines are the jobs most drain techs learn to hate before they learn to love them. They clog with silt and grit instead of grease, they run through fragile corrugated pipe that snags a nozzle every three feet, and half the time the homeowner has no idea where the line even goes. But once you understand what you're dealing with, French drains, yard drains and downspout lines turn into fast, profitable add-on work — especially if you already own a jetter and a spool of 1/4" hose.

Why exterior drainage lines clog in the first place
Interior drain lines carry water, waste and grease. Exterior lines carry dirt. That one difference changes everything about how you clean them.
The usual suspects:
- Silt and sediment. Every rainstorm washes fine grit into yard drains and downspout lines. It settles in the low spots and slowly builds until the pipe won't pass water. This is the number one killer of exterior drainage.
- Roots. Perforated and loose-jointed pipe is an open invitation. Roots find the seams, the perforations and any cracked fitting, then thicken until they choke the line.
- Mulch, leaves and organic debris. Downspouts feed a steady diet of roof grit and leaf litter straight into the pipe. Landscapers pile mulch over pop-up emitters and bury them. Organic muck packs down into a plug that water alone won't move.
- Bellies in corrugated pipe. Cheap corrugated pipe gets laid without proper bedding, then the ground settles. Now you've got a low spot that holds water and collects silt permanently. You can clean it out, but it'll fill back in — and that's a conversation you need to have with the customer, not a secret you keep.
Know your pipe before you commit
Exterior drainage is a grab bag of pipe types, and each one behaves differently under a nozzle. Figure out what you've got before you decide on pressure and nozzle size.
Corrugated HDPE (the black ribbed stuff)
This is the most common exterior drainage pipe you'll meet, and it's the trickiest to jet. The ribs that give it flexibility also give your nozzle a hundred little ledges to snag on. Every rib is a potential catch point, and every fitting — couplers, tees, elbows — is a hard snag waiting to grab your jets or your hose.
Corrugated pipe is also thin-walled and not built to take abuse. Blast it with too much pressure at a stationary point and you can chew through the wall or blow a coupling apart. Treat it gently.
PVC (smooth white or green)
Solid PVC is a pleasure by comparison. Smooth bore, glued joints, tolerates pressure well. If the exterior line is real PVC, you can clean it much like an interior lateral. Perforated PVC used in French drains is a different animal — more on that below.
Clay
Older properties may run clay tile for yard drainage. Clay is rigid and holds up to pressure, but the joints are notorious for root intrusion and the pipe itself can be cracked or offset. Go in expecting roots at every joint and be ready for the nozzle to hang up on a misaligned section.
The corrugated pipe rulebook
Because corrugated HDPE is what you'll see most, commit these rules to memory:
- Small nozzle. A compact 1/4" nozzle rides through the ribs and around tight bends far better than anything larger. Bulk is your enemy here.
- Moderate pressure. You're flushing silt and soft debris, not cutting roots out of a 6" main. Dial it back. The pipe is fragile and the clog is usually soft. More pressure just risks the pipe and gives you nothing.
- Keep it moving. Never let the nozzle sit and hammer one spot in corrugated pipe. Constant motion — feed and retrieve, feed and retrieve — protects the wall and clears the line evenly.
- Expect snags at fittings. When the nozzle stops advancing, don't force it. You've almost certainly hit a coupler, a tee or a tight elbow. Back off a few inches, let the jets clear the path, and ease forward again. Forcing a snag is how nozzles get stuck.

Downspout lines: debris, emitters and strainers
Downspout drains carry roof runoff away from the foundation, usually out to a pop-up emitter in the yard or a curb outlet. They clog for predictable reasons.
Pop-up emitters. These spring-loaded caps sit flush in the lawn and pop open under water pressure. They also get buried under mulch, mowed over, packed with dirt, or jammed shut by roots and debris. Before you jet, find the emitter and clear it — a plugged emitter means the line has nowhere to drain and you'll just be pushing debris against a closed door. Sometimes clearing and freeing the emitter is the entire fix.
Debris loads. Downspouts feed shingle grit, leaves, pine needles and roof muck straight into the pipe. The debris is usually soft and jets out easily once you get a nozzle moving through it. Work from the accessible cleanout or the downspout connection toward the emitter, and expect a slug of black sludge at the outlet when you break through.
Leaf strainers. Recommend one after you clean. A simple strainer or leaf catcher at the downspout inlet keeps the bulk of the debris out of the pipe and turns your one-time cleaning into a line that stays clear. It's a value-add the customer will thank you for, and it sets up the recurring-maintenance conversation.
The French drain reality check
Here's where honesty separates the pros from the hacks. A French drain is not a pipe you clean — it's a system.
A true French drain is perforated pipe laid in a trench full of gravel, usually wrapped in filter fabric, designed to collect groundwater through the perforations and carry it away. The pipe is only half the system. The gravel envelope around it is the other half.
You can absolutely jet the perforated pipe and clear silt out of the bore. But if the problem is a clogged gravel envelope — fabric blinded with silt, gravel packed with fines, soil migrated into the aggregate — clearing the pipe does not fix the drainage. Water still can't get through the plugged gravel to reach the perforations. No nozzle on earth cleans gravel and soil that's buried three feet down.
Have the honest conversation up front. Tell the customer plainly: "I can clean out the pipe itself, and if the pipe is what's silted up, that'll help. But if the gravel and fabric around the pipe are clogged — which is common on older French drains — jetting the pipe won't solve a saturated-yard problem. That's an excavation and replacement job, not a jetting job." Set that expectation before you start and you look like the expert. Set it after you've charged them and failed to fix the yard, and you look like you overpromised.
When the perforated pipe itself is the issue — silted bore, roots at the outlet — a small nozzle at moderate pressure on 1/4" hose does the work without blowing fines into the gravel any worse than they already are.
1/4" hose and small nozzles are the right tool
For nearly all of this work, light gear wins. A 1/4" hose is flexible enough to chase tight corrugated bends and pop-up connections that a stiffer 3/8" line fights the whole way. Paired with a compact nozzle, you get the reach and maneuverability exterior drainage demands.
You don't need big flow here. Exterior drainage clogs are mostly silt, sludge and soft organics — moderate GPM and moderate PSI clear them fine, and the lighter touch protects fragile corrugated pipe. An easy add-on service worth selling

Will jetting fix a French drain that isn't draining?
