Yard, Downspout and French Drains: Assess Before Jetting

An overflowing downspout or saturated yard does not automatically identify a blocked pipe. Exterior drainage includes inlets, outlets, buried connections and sometimes perforated pipe, aggregate and filter material. Assess the system before promising a cleaning result.

Find the actual restriction

Locate the route and outlet where possible. Inspect accessible grates, strainers and emitters without operating a nozzle into an uncontrolled discharge area. A blocked inlet, damaged pipe or unsuitable grade may require different work.

Identify the pipe product

Corrugated and smooth-wall pipes vary in construction and permitted maintenance methods. Material alone does not supply a safe jetting pressure. Consult the relevant product guidance, such as the ADS Drainage Handbook, and obtain manufacturer advice when the installed product is uncertain.

Treat a French drain as a system

Cleaning the pipe bore does not prove that surrounding aggregate, fabric or soil can accept water. Diagnose those components separately. Do not promise that a small nozzle will restore every perforated drainage system or that excavation is always required.

Check fit and containment

Where jetting is appropriate, confirm nozzle dimensions, fittings, hose characteristics and retrieval route. A 1/4-inch connection does not guarantee passage through corrugated couplers or tight bends. Follow the equipment procedure and reassess any unexpected resistance.

Report cleaning and repair separately

Record what was inspected and cleaned, the observed drainage result and unresolved defects. Base future maintenance on actual sediment and conditions. Exterior drainage is not automatically a quick or low-risk add-on to a pressure-washing visit.
